ABBA

ASK some Indonesian guys ‘what do you know about Sweden’, they might answer Volvo and ABBA! First, of course a luxury car, an official car for Indonesian VVIP in Soeharto era. Second, related to music. Certainly. ABBA is music band from Sweden. Why should I recall this name, ABBA? Why do I remember this name? Here’s the story…

I was in the sixth class of an elementary school in my suburb in 1977 when I heard this song for the first time. Can you here the drums Fernando….? That was the lyric I heard. I didnt know the meaning at that time. My uncle had introuced me this song when he brought a cassette which consist of Fernando from Jakarta. In same year, probably in last December 1977, I watched the early video of ABBA who sang Fernando. Four persons: 2 men, 2 women, standing on the stage with their own expression.

Video tape player owned by Haji Iing Ibrahim, my neighbour, who had sons and daughter. Nowdays, his daughter become a dangdut singer, Vetti Vera, and his son also become a singer, name Alam. Dangdut is a genre of music which dominated by tabla or kendang percussion. Haji Iing Ibrahim of course the only person who had video tape player at that time in my suburb. One of his son, Ricky, is my classmate. So that why I can watch video. Frankly speaking, I’m very impressed with this song. When I was in secondary school and high school, I bought a cassette with my own money.

ABBA is a quartet music group consist with Benny Anderson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Anny-Frid Lyngstad, and Agnetha Faltskog. So ABBA is an acronym formed from the first letters of Agnetta-Bjorn-Benny-Annyfrid. Their first appearance was in 1972. I love their song because of his simply rhytem and easy lyrics. When I was in a senior high school, I bought their cassette “Summer Night City”. May be you know some of their songs like Honey Honey, Money Money Money, Gimme Gimme Gimme, I Do I Do I Do, and Ring Ring… So funny but cool.
